Black mold in shower: DIY or call building maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I just noticed a few small fuzzy patches on the ceiling. It’s in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment, and it's definitely gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. What's the best way to tackle this myself, or should I just call the building maintenance immediately?

That black grout and fuzzy ceiling are classic signs of a bathroom mould issue, and it's very common here with our high humidity. The recent increase makes perfect sense; mould thrives when relative humidity stays above 60%, which is most of the year in Dubai.
For a small, surface-level issue, a DIY approach can be effective. Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Spray it generously on the affected grout and ceiling patches, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. For persistent black spots on grout, a paste of baking soda and water can help. Always wear gloves and a mask during cleaning. The most critical step is to improve ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting outside. Wiping down wet surfaces squeegeeing the shower walls after use will also significantly reduce moisture. However, if the mould has penetrated deeply into the grout, reappears quickly after a thorough cleaning, or covers an area larger than a square meter, it's time to call your building maintenance. In apartment buildings, persistent mould can sometimes indicate a hidden leak within the walls or from the apartment above, which is the building's responsibility to investigate. A professional inspection, which includes moisture mapping, can identify the true source. If the problem is recurring and significant, lab testing of a swab sample can identify the mould species, which is important for assessing health risks and determining the correct remediation protocol. For JVC apartments, building maintenance is your first call for structural moisture issues; if their response is insufficient, a specialist indoor health company can provide an independent assessment. |
