Black mold in shower: DIY or professional cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It's been extra humid lately and I think our bathroom vent isn't strong enough. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service for this?

It depends on the size and type. A small patch under 1 square foot can often be handled with a DIY approach, but the climate here complicates it.

For a small area, use a dedicated mould remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots penetrating porous grout. Scrub the area, let the solution sit, and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after. However, the root cause is your bathroom's high humidity. That weak vent fan is likely not meeting Dubai Civil Defence code, which requires it to sufficiently exchange moist air. If the mould returns quickly, the issue is systemic.

If the patch is larger than 1 square foot, has a musty odour, or you see discolouration on the ceiling (suggesting potential growth inside the void), a professional assessment is warranted. They can identify the species to confirm it's a common bathroom mould and use containment procedures to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms during cleaning. The ultimate fix will involve addressing the ventilation to meet local standards for our humid climate.
