Black mold in shower: DIY or professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black mold spots in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s been worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I’m worried about my family breathing it in, but I have no idea what it costs to get it professionally removed here. Should I just try to clean it myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional company?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from temperature shifts between the hot outdoors and air-conditioned interiors. For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach can be effective. Wear a mask and gloves, and scrub with a dedicated mold remover or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Ensure the area is well-ventilated.

However, if the mold has reappeared after previous cleaning, covers an area larger than a square foot, or is in the ceiling corner (suggesting possible moisture penetration from above), professional assessment is recommended. The goal isn't just to remove visible growth but to identify and rectify the moisture source—often inadequate ventilation, a leaking pipe in the ceiling void, or thermal bridging causing condensation.

Persistent black discoloration can sometimes be Stachybotrys chartarum, which requires more careful handling. For families, especially with children or those with respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection can confirm the species and ensure spores are contained during removal to prevent spreading. Companies with a microbiology lab can provide a verified post-remediation report, which is valuable for your peace of mind and property records. The cost for professional remediation is an investment in identifying the root cause to prevent its return.
