Black mold in shower grout: clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning dark grey and black, and it’s spreading up the wall. I first noticed a small spot after the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, but now it’s getting worse and has a really damp, earthy smell. I’m in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried it’s black mold. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

The dark grey and black discoloration spreading up your shower grout, especially following a humidity spike, is very likely a mold colony. The damp, earthy smell confirms active microbial growth. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue in bathrooms where high humidity and condensation from showers create a perfect environment for mold, even with year-round AC.

For a small, surface-level area (under one square foot), you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated grout mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush, then rinse and dry the area completely. However, this often only addresses the surface appearance, and the mold hyphae can remain deep within the porous grout, leading to rapid regrowth.

Given that it's spreading and has a strong odor, the infestation is likely more established. Professional assessment is strongly recommended. In serious cases, the mold may have penetrated behind the tiles, which requires more extensive remediation to address the root moisture source and prevent structural damage or cross-contamination into your villa's AC system.

A certified inspector can perform non-invasive moisture mapping to identify the full extent and take a surface sample for lab analysis. This is the only way to accurately identify the mold species, including whether it is the notorious Stachybotrys chartarum ("black mold") or another type, and to determine the appropriate remediation protocol. For a villa in Jumeirah, it is prudent to get a professional diagnosis to protect your property's indoor health.
