Black mold in shower grout: DIY bleach or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. The room doesn't have a window and the musty smell is getting worse, especially when the AC isn't running. I’m wondering if this is something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

For a small surface area of black spots on non-porous tile, a targeted DIY approach can be effective. Use a dedicated grout mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar, which can penetrate better than bleach on porous surfaces. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush, ensuring the room is well-ventilated.

However, the lack of ventilation and persistent musty odor indicate a systemic humidity issue common in Dubai bathrooms. Bleach often only bleaches the surface mold while the hyphae (roots) remain deep within the grout, leading to rapid regrowth. If the affected area is larger than a square foot, the mold has returned after previous cleaning, or the musty smell permeates the room, the problem is likely beyond surface level.

In these cases, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts, a hidden plumbing leak, or inadequate sealing. They can perform a moisture meter reading on the walls and may recommend targeted antimicrobial treatment. For long-term control, addressing the root cause is essential: run the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower, regularly service your AC to manage humidity, and consider a dehumidifier if the smell persists.
