Black mold in shower grout: DIY clean or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black mold spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's a small ensuite in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, but the smell is really musty. I'm worried it's worse behind the walls. Should I just try to clean it myself with bleach, or is this something where I need to get a professional mold remediation company in Dubai to get a proper assessment and quote?

Small black spots in shower grout are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from air conditioning cycles. For a surface-level issue you've just noticed, a DIY clean is a reasonable first step.

Use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface colour and can drive moisture deeper, potentially worsening the problem. Scrub with a stiff brush, ensure excellent ventilation during cleaning, and use a squeegee on tiles after every shower to keep the area dry.

However, the musty smell suggests a deeper moisture issue. In JVC apartments, this often means water has seeped behind the tiles, especially if the shower sealant is old or cracked. Mold behind walls is a health risk and can damage building structures.

Given the persistent odour and your concern about what's hidden, a professional assessment is recommended. Reputable inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to check within walls without damage. They can identify if the problem is superficial or requires tile removal and substrate drying. In many cases, Dubai municipalities require remediation for hidden mold to meet indoor air quality standards before property transfer, so proper documentation from a certified provider is valuable. Request an assessment that includes a written report and, if necessary, a lab analysis to identify the mold type.
