Black mold in shower grout: DIY or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just found a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. I tried scrubbing it with a bleach spray, but it came back darker a few days later. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

Black mold in shower grout is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation from showers and air conditioning. When it returns quickly after a bleach cleaning, it indicates the mold has penetrated the porous grout and may be growing behind the tiles.

For a small, surface-level patch, a proper DIY approach can work. Use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a dedicated grout mold remover, not just bleach which only removes surface discoloration. Scrub thoroughly, then run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour after showering and wipe down wet surfaces to reduce moisture. This addresses the symptom, not the root cause.

Professional assessment is recommended when the mold is persistent, covers a large area, or has a strong, musty odor. In many Jumeirah apartments, the issue stems from hidden problems like inadequate sealing, failing grout, or moisture trapped within the wall cavity from a slow leak. A professional inspection can identify the source of the moisture, which is critical for a permanent solution. They use moisture meters and, if necessary, can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which guides the correct remediation protocol. The goal is to fix the water issue first, then safely remove the contaminated materials.
