Black mold in shower grout: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s in a corner that doesn't get much sun, and the smell is really musty. I tried a bleach spray but it came back after a couple of weeks. For a standard bathroom in a Jumeirah villa, should I just keep trying DIY solutions or is it worth getting a professional mold treatment company to handle it, and what would that usually cost?

Black mold in shower grout is a common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from hot showers. The bleach spray you used only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

For a recurring problem in a low-sunlight, high-humidity area, a professional assessment is often warranted. The persistent musty smell indicates active microbial growth, which can degrade grout and potentially affect indoor air quality. Professionals use methods beyond surface cleaning, such as antimicrobial coatings or, in severe cases, grout removal and re-sealing to create a lasting barrier against moisture. The cost for professional treatment is variable, as it depends entirely on the extent of the infestation and the square footage of affected tiling. You would need to request an on-site assessment for an accurate scope and quote.

If you wish to try another DIY approach first, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner (not bleach) and a stiff brush, then significantly improve ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wipe down wet surfaces. This addresses the moisture source, which is the root cause. If the mold returns within a few weeks despite these consistent measures, the growth is likely too established for DIY solutions to be effective long-term.
