Black mold in shower grout: professional cost in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black mold spots growing in the grout between the tiles above our shower in Jumeirah Village Circle. The AC runs constantly but the bathroom window is small and doesn't get great airflow. I'm worried it's a bigger problem behind the walls. What's the average cost in Dubai to get a professional to properly assess and remove it, and is it worth hiring someone or can I handle it myself with a good cleaner?

Black mold in shower grout is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from constant AC use creating a damp environment. For a small, visible patch confined to the surface, you can often handle it yourself. Use a dedicated grout mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar; scrub thoroughly, then ensure the area is completely dry. Improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan longer after showers and occasionally using a portable dehumidifier.
The concern about problems behind the wall is valid. If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, if the grout is soft or crumbling, or if there's a musty odor, there's likely moisture trapped within the wall or behind the tiles. In these cases, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the source of the moisture, which could be a leaking pipe or failed waterproofing. For professional assessment and remediation, costs are not fixed and depend entirely on the extent of the problem. A simple surface treatment will be significantly less than a project requiring tile removal, wall drying, and re-waterproofing. Reputable providers will conduct an initial inspection to determine the scope before providing a detailed quote. It is worth hiring a professional for serious cases to ensure the moisture source is identified and resolved, preventing structural damage and health issues from recurring mold. Always request a detailed scope of work and ensure the company follows Dubai Municipality standards for mold remediation. |
