Black mold in shower: remove myself or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled mold spreading along the ceiling above the shower. The AC has been working overtime with the humidity, and the bathroom window is small and doesn't ventilate well. What’s the best, fastest way to get rid of this for good, and should I be calling my landlord about it first?

The black, speckled mold on your bathroom ceiling is a classic sign of condensation buildup, a very common issue in Dubai apartments due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating a temperature differential. You can attempt to remove it yourself if the affected area is small (less than 1 square meter) and you are not sensitive to mold.
For a DIY approach, wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then rinse and dry the surface thoroughly. The critical step is addressing the moisture source; run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower, and keep the door open to improve air circulation. A small dehumidifier can also help. However, given its location on the ceiling and the persistent Dubai climate, this is likely a recurring issue that simple cleaning won't solve permanently. The mold may be growing on the surface due to condensation, but it could also indicate a deeper issue like a leak from the apartment above or within the ceiling void. For a persistent or large-scale problem, a professional inspection is advised to identify the true moisture source. You should absolutely notify your landlord. Under typical Dubai rental regulations, structural issues and problems arising from building infrastructure (like inadequate ventilation or hidden leaks) are the landlord's responsibility. Inform them in writing with photos. A reputable company can provide a detailed assessment and lab analysis to determine the mold type and moisture penetration, which gives you a factual report to present to the landlord, outlining the necessary remediation work to resolve it for good. |
