Black mold in toddler's closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler’s bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has these black fuzzy spots in the corner that I just noticed while putting away laundry. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it’s making his occasional cough worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to check it out?

Black fuzzy spots in a toddler's closet are a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, especially on interior walls where condensation can form from cold AC meeting warm, moist air. For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach can be effective.

First, ensure the area is well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used to scrub the area. The key is to address the moisture source; running a dehumidifier or ensuring the AC is set to a consistently lower humidity level is critical to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, with a toddler who has a cough, it is strongly advised to call a professional for an inspection. The concern isn't just the visible mold but the potential for hidden growth inside the wall cavity or for the type of mold to be more problematic. A professional assessment, often involving air and surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab, can identify the species and the full extent of the contamination. This is the only way to confirm the environment is truly safe for a child with respiratory sensitivity. DIY cleaning can often disturb spores and temporarily worsen air quality without solving the underlying problem. For health assurance, a professional evaluation is the recommended course of action.
