Black mold in villa after storm: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling extra humid lately, and I’ve just found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the corner of my bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. We had that big storm a few weeks back and I think some water might have seeped in. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this myself, or should I call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai straight away?

Black mold growth after a storm is a serious concern in Dubai's climate. Given the high humidity and water seepage, this is likely a significant moisture issue.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. Mix a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and scrub the area. However, this only addresses surface mold; the hidden moisture in your wall and behind the wardrobe is the real problem. You must find and fix the leak source and use a dehumidifier to dry the structure completely, which is challenging.

In your case, with the mold spreading behind furniture and following a storm, professional remediation is strongly advised. This is not just surface cleaning. Spores are likely airborne and the colony is established within the building materials. A certified professional will contain the area, remove contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and most importantly, identify and resolve the hidden moisture intrusion.

The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for healthy housing, and unresolved dampness violates these standards. For a villa in Jumeirah, ensuring the building envelope is intact is crucial for long-term value and health. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and thermal imaging, is needed to assess the full extent of the damage. The cost of professional remediation is almost always lower than the long-term cost of structural repair and health issues from recurrent mold.
