Black mold in villa closet: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has these black splotches that have been spreading since the last storm. It's a pretty big area, maybe a meter wide, and the room has started to smell damp. I'm worried it's a bigger issue in the ceiling or walls. Should I just clean it myself with bleach, or is this a job for a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a fix like this?

With a meter-wide area of black splotches and a persistent damp smell in your Jumeirah villa, this is almost certainly a professional job. The visible growth is a sign of a significant moisture issue within the ceiling cavity or walls, likely from a leak during the storm that hasn't fully dried.

Avoid bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, often only bleaching the surface colour while leaving the root structure intact. More importantly, it adds moisture, which can accelerate regrowth. Disturbing it yourself also risks releasing a large number of spores into your home's air.

The humid Dubai climate and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive if any moisture is present. A proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the source of the water intrusion, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing the affected materials, and using professional-grade drying equipment and antimicrobials.

For a problem of this scale, you should get a professional inspection and remediation quote. The cost is driven by the extent of the hidden damage and the required structural repairs, not just the visible stain. Reputable companies provide a detailed assessment and scope of work before any pricing.
