Black mold in villa closet: professional cost or DIY bleach?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Park villa has had a damp smell for a while, but after the humidity last week, I opened it to find black fuzzy spots all over the back wall and our leather bags. We’ve been here for 3 years and never had this issue before. What’s the realistic cost for professional mold remediation for a space like this, and is it absolutely necessary to hire experts or can I tackle it myself with bleach?

Professional remediation for a confined space like a closet typically ranges from a few hundred to over a thousand dirhams, depending on the extent of damage to the wall and belongings. The cost is driven by containment protocols, specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers, and antimicrobial treatment—not just wiping surfaces.

Bleach is not recommended. It is mostly water, which feeds the mold root system inside porous materials like drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. For surface cleaning on non-porous items, a detergent solution is more effective and safer.

Given the description—black fuzzy spots on a wall and leather—this indicates a significant moisture issue, likely condensation from the adjacent room’s AC cold wall meeting Dubai's high humidity. A professional inspection is necessary to identify and rectify the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return. They can also assess if the wall cavity is affected, which is a DIY impossibility. Remediation companies in Dubai should provide a detailed scope of work and post-clearance verification, often with lab testing, to confirm the space is safe. For valuable items like leather goods, specific conservation techniques are required to prevent permanent damage.
