Black mold in villa: DIY removal or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of the living room wall behind the sofa. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

The black spots spreading in a humid Al Barsha villa are very likely mold, given Dubai's high humidity levels and the tendency for condensation to form on cooler exterior walls, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow.

For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), you can attempt DIY removal. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for surfaces), scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. However, this only addresses visible growth, not the root moisture problem or any mold inside the wall cavity.

Given the description—spreading spots along a corner, a two-year-old villa, and the wall's location—this suggests a persistent moisture issue. It could be a minor condensation point or a more serious leak from plumbing or the AC unit inside the wall. Spreading mold often indicates an active moisture source.

In the UAE, professional remediation is strongly advised for recurring mold, areas larger than one square meter, or when the cause isn't obvious. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source. They will contain the area to prevent spores from spreading, remove contaminated materials like drywall if necessary, and address the moisture problem to prevent it from returning. For a definitive identification of the mold type, a sample can be sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis.

Calling a professional for an assessment is the most reliable course of action here. They can determine if it's a simple fix or a sign of a larger building envelope issue common in villas here.
