Black mold in villa: need professional inspection immediately?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from our summer holiday, and I’ve just found a patch of black spots behind the wardrobe in their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. We’ve lived here for two years and never had an issue, but the humidity this past month has been awful. Is this something I need a professional mold inspection for immediately, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner?

Given the symptoms and the visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The combination of persistent coughing in children and discovered black mould, particularly in Dubai's high humidity, creates a situation where DIY cleaning is not advisable.

The primary risk is that cleaning visible mould without identifying and rectifying the moisture source will cause it to return quickly. More importantly, disturbing the mould to clean it can release a large number of spores and mycotoxins into the air, potentially worsening the respiratory symptoms your children are experiencing. A professional inspection is designed to assess the full extent of the problem, identify the species of mould (as not all black discoloration is the dangerous Stachybotrys), and locate the hidden moisture source—which could be a condensation line leak from the AC unit, a plumbing issue in the wall, or vapour from an unventilated bathroom.

In the UAE, the extreme humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mould in hidden spaces like behind furniture or inside walls where cold surfaces meet warm, moist air. An inspector will use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging to find these hidden damp areas without unnecessary demolition. They should also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to determine the spore count in the room and the exact species present, which informs the appropriate remediation strategy. For a confirmed case with health symptoms, especially in a child's bedroom, this diagnostic approach is the most reliable way to restore indoor health safely.
