Black mold in wardrobe after storm - need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started to get these black speckles all over the back panel. We first spotted it a couple of weeks after that big December storm, and it’s slowly getting worse despite me trying to wipe it down. I'm worried it's spreading inside the walls. Should I call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai, and what’s a rough estimate for treating something like this?

Yes, you should call a professional. The black speckles are a strong indicator of active mold growth, and wiping it down is insufficient as it only removes the surface appearance, not the root colony.

This is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially after significant rain events like the December storm. The problem likely started when driving rain was forced into micro-fissures or small gaps in the exterior wall's rendering, creating dampness within the wall cavity. Your wardrobe's back panel, acting as a barrier, becomes the coldest surface where this trapped moisture condenses, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to flourish. The constant high humidity and year-round AC use can exacerbate the condensation issue.

Given that it's worsening, the mold is almost certainly spreading inside the wall. A professional inspection is critical to assess the extent of the damage behind the panel. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall cavity without unnecessary demolition. The remediation process for a situation like this typically involves controlled removal of the affected wardrobe panel, addressing the mold and moisture source within the wall, applying antimicrobial treatments, and ensuring the exterior wall is properly sealed to prevent recurrence.

The scope and cost depend entirely on the infestation's size and how far it has spread within the wall structure. For a standard wardrobe, you can expect the process to be a contained project, but it requires proper diagnostic equipment and remediation techniques to be effective long-term. Always request a company that provides before-and-after lab testing to verify the space has been returned to a healthy fungal ecology.
