Black mold in wardrobe - contact landlord or cleaning company?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing on the back wall of our master bedroom wardrobe. It's the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah Village Circle, and it feels slightly damp to the touch. I’m really worried it's spreading. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai—should I call my landlord first, or is there a specific cleaning company I should contact for an inspection?

Based on the symptoms you've described—small black spots on an external wall, a damp feel, and location in JVC—this is highly indicative of a mold colony, likely exacerbated by condensation from your AC unit and the high humidity prevalent in Dubai. The external wall is a common point for thermal bridging, where the temperature difference between the chilled interior and the hot, humid exterior causes moisture to condense inside, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.

Your first step should be to contact your landlord or building management immediately. Under UAE rental law, structural issues, including water intrusion and resultant mold problems stemming from the building envelope, are typically the responsibility of the property owner. They are obligated to address the root cause. However, do not attempt to clean this yourself with standard detergents, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.

Given the visible growth and dampness, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the problem, identify the moisture source, and determine the species of mold for an effective remediation plan. We at Saniservice specialize in this exact scenario. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/surface sampling to provide a comprehensive report, which can be invaluable for your landlord to understand the necessary repairs.

For a thorough assessment and to prevent further spread, I recommend contacting our specialists. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We can then coordinate with your landlord on the necessary remediation and hygienization process to ensure your home is safe and healthy.
