Black mold in wardrobe: DIY or call professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black, fuzzy spots appearing on the back of our wardrobe in the master bedroom. The room feels really damp, especially compared to the rest of the apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

Black mould on a wardrobe is common in Dubai, especially in JLT where high humidity and constant AC use create condensation. For a small patch under one square foot, DIY can be sufficient. Scrub the area with a vinegar solution (not bleach, as it only removes surface colour) and improve air circulation with a dehumidifier or by running the AC fan more often.

However, the dampness you describe suggests a larger issue. If the mould covers over a square foot, has penetrated porous materials like wood or drywall, or you notice a persistent musty odour, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source—often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe inside the wall, poor external sealing, or rising damp—which DIY cannot fix. In Dubai’s climate, simply cleaning visible mould without addressing the root moisture problem guarantees it will return.

Professional remediation is also critical if anyone in the household has asthma, allergies, or is immunocompromised. A reputable company, ideally one with its own microbiology lab, can provide a species identification to confirm the risk level and verify the cleanup was successful with post-remediation testing. This data-driven approach ensures the problem is resolved, not just hidden.
