Black mold in wardrobe: remove ourselves or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back corner of our walk-in wardrobe, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing for a while, and lately my husband has been having constant allergy-like symptoms—sneezing and a stuffy nose that won't go away. I'm really worried this is the cause. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of it ourselves, or should we call our building management immediately?

For a large patch of black mold that has likely been growing for some time and is correlating with health symptoms, the safest course is to call your building management immediately. In Dubai, the landlord is typically responsible for resolving structural issues leading to mold, such as a hidden water leak from a pipe or AC condensation drain, which is a very common source in JVC apartments.

You can inform management of the issue and your husband's symptoms, but avoid disturbing the area extensively before a professional inspection. Do not attempt to bleach or scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen allergy exposure. The high humidity and constant AC use here creates perfect conditions for mold when a moisture source is present.

A professional inspection is strongly advised to identify and fix the root cause. They will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the leak's origin. For remediation, the affected drywall may need to be cut out and replaced to properly remove the deeply rooted colony. Simply surface cleaning will not solve the problem. Once the leak is fixed and the mold is professionally remediated, your husband's symptoms should subside. In the meantime, keep the wardrobe door closed and the room well-ventilated.
