Black mold near AC causing cough: clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just noticed some black speckles growing along the bottom of the bedroom wall near the AC unit. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and it’s never been an issue until this super humid weather started last month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check inside the AC ducts?

Black mold near an AC unit, especially during Dubai's humid season, is a common trigger for respiratory irritation and nighttime coughing in children. The high humidity combined with cold surfaces from AC operation creates ideal conditions for mold growth, often starting inside the wall or the unit itself where condensation collects.
For a small visible patch, you can clean the wall surface with a diluted vinegar solution, which is often more effective than bleach at penetrating porous surfaces. However, this only addresses the symptom. The mold inside your AC unit or the wall cavity behind it will continue to release spores and likely regrow. Given the symptoms and the location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use borescopes to inspect inside wall cavities and AC ductwork to identify the true moisture source and extent of growth, which is almost always larger than what's visible. In the UAE, proper remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520, which focuses on containing the area and removing the source, not just surface cleaning. This is crucial to stop the recurrent exposure causing the cough. A company with its own microbiology lab can also provide a species identification from a tape lift sample, which confirms the type of mold and informs the appropriate remediation protocol. |
