Black mold near AC unit: emergency or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. I was putting away winter clothes in the master bedroom closet yesterday and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots on the back wall and on a couple of my leather bags. The AC unit is right next to this closet. Is this something I need to call a specialist about immediately, or can it wait until next week for my building's maintenance to take a look?

That pattern of mold growth near an AC unit is a common issue in Dubai's climate and points directly to a condensation problem. The AC's cold air is likely causing water vapor in the humid air to condense on the cooler wall surface inside the closet, creating the damp environment mold needs. This requires attention, but is not always a full-blown emergency.
You should not wait for general building maintenance. While they handle common areas, mold inside your unit, especially if it's active and linked to a potential AC issue, is typically the resident's responsibility to address. The immediate step is to stop the moisture source. Ensure the closet is ventilated; leave the doors open and consider using a portable dehumidifier or a fan to dry the area thoroughly. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can worsen airborne spores and doesn't address the root cause. A specialist should inspect it to determine the extent. They will identify if the mold is only surface-level or has penetrated the drywall, and crucially, diagnose why the condensation is occurring—be it an AC drain line leak, poor insulation around the unit's ducts, or excessive negative air pressure in the room. In many JVC apartments, this is a recurring issue due to the high ambient humidity and continuous AC operation. A professional inspection with proper diagnostics can pinpoint the solution, whether it's repairing the AC, improving insulation, or a targeted remediation of the affected area. |
