Black mold near AC vent: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a really musty smell, and I've just found patches of black, powdery stuff around the air vent in our main bedroom. We've been dealing with this for a couple of weeks and it's starting to worry me with the baby in the room. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or should I just call in a professional company for an inspection, and what would that likely cost here in Dubai?

Based on your description, you are very likely dealing with a significant mold colony, potentially Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or more commonly Aspergillus niger in our region. The musty odor and powdery black substance around the AC vent are classic indicators of microbial growth within the ductwork or the AC unit's evaporator coil.

In Dubai's climate, the constant cycling between extreme outdoor heat and high humidity and cold, conditioned indoor air creates massive condensation issues within AC systems. This moisture, combined with dust and organic debris, is the perfect breeding ground for mold. Bleach is strongly discouraged for several reasons: it is ineffective on porous surfaces, its high water content can actually feed the mold root system deeper within the building materials, and it can create dangerous chlorine fumes when used in an enclosed space, especially for an infant.

This is not a DIY situation. The mold you see is likely just the fruiting body; the main colony is hidden inside the ducts. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize spores throughout your apartment, significantly increasing your family's exposure, which is a serious health risk, particularly for an infant with a developing respiratory system.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. A certified company like Saniservice will conduct a visual assessment and air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration levels. Remediation involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment of the entire duct system, and addressing the moisture source. Costs for inspection and remediation in Dubai can vary based on the AC system's size and contamination severity, but an initial inspection typically starts from AED 500-1000.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you cease using that AC unit and contact a professional immediately. You can reach our certified team at Saniservice for a consultation and inspection by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com.
