Black mold near AC vent: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right next to the AC vent and the wall feels slightly damp. What's the most effective way to deal with this myself, or should I call a professional cleaning company right away?

The dampness and black spots near your AC vent are a classic sign of condensation issues common in Dubai villas, especially in high-humidity areas like Al Barsha. The wall feels damp because your cold AC supply is hitting the warmer wall surface, creating moisture that mold uses to grow.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY approach. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Scrub the visible mold off the surface. The critical step is to completely dry the area immediately using a fan or dehumidifier to prevent rapid regrowth. However, this only addresses the surface mold you can see.

Given the location directly beside the AC vent and the description of "spreading," the moisture source is likely inside the wall or AC system itself. The visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout the room.

In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the exact source of the dampness—whether it's a poorly insulated AC duct, a crack in the external wall, or an issue within the ventilation system itself. Proper remediation requires isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing any contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test to identify the mold species, which informs the remediation protocol and helps verify the area is truly clean after treatment.
