Black mold on baseboards: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the baseboards in our master bedroom closet. It's been really humid lately and I think it might be from some clothes we stored in there. What's the best way to clean this myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company in Dubai?

Black mold on baseboards is common here due to our high humidity, especially in closets with stored items that trap moisture. The first step is to identify the source; it's likely from condensation or a small, unnoticed leak. Check for plumbing leaks in adjacent walls and ensure your AC is running adequately to dehumidify the space.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water). Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. However, DIY cleaning only addresses surface mold. If the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or wood, or if it returns quickly, the moisture problem is still active and the root cause remains. In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation within wall cavities is a frequent issue that DIY can't resolve. If the area is larger than one square meter, if you smell a persistent musty odor, or if household members experience unexplained respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness and can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This is crucial for truly resolving the problem and ensuring your indoor air quality is safe. |
