Black mold on bedroom carpet: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the edge of the carpet in our master bedroom, right up against the wall. It’s been really humid lately and I think it might be from the AC unit on the other side of that wall. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should we call the building management first?

That's a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, very common in Dubai's humidity. The wall is likely a cold bridge from the AC unit, causing moisture to condense and soak into the carpet edge.
For a small area (under one square meter), a careful DIY approach is possible. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected carpet and underlying padding vigorously, then dry it completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier. Moisture is the real enemy; if it stays damp, the mold will return. However, if the mold has spread extensively, has a strong musty odor, or you see it on the wall itself, it's time to call building management. Dubai Municipality regulations often hold the building owner responsible for the structural envelope and common systems, including AC condensation drain lines that might be clogged and causing this seepage. They should inspect the AC unit and the wall cavity for the moisture source. Given the location against the wall, the problem is likely inside the partition, which you cannot access. A professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the hidden cause; surface cleaning alone often fails in these cases. |
