Black mold on bedroom wall: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots growing on the back of our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall facing the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Based on the description of black, fuzzy spots on a wardrobe against an exterior wall, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the UAE's high humidity and temperature differentials. The wall is likely a thermal bridge, where warm, humid air from the room condenses on the cooler surface, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

For a small, surface-level area (less than 1 square meter), a cautious DIY approach is possible. First, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area with plastic sheeting. The wall and furniture must be thoroughly dried. Use a dehumidifier and increase AC cooling to lower the room's humidity below 50%. Clean the affected hard surfaces with a detergent solution, followed by wiping with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect. However, this only addresses surface mold.

Crucially, in Dubai, the root cause is almost always hidden moisture. The mold you see is often just the fruiting body; the hyphae (roots) can penetrate porous materials like drywall and wood. If the wall is cold to the touch, there may be an insulation issue within the wall cavity that you cannot address. DIY methods typically fail to resolve this underlying problem, leading to rapid regrowth.

Given the location on an exterior wall and the potential for concealed growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture and condensation points and borescopes to inspect inside wall cavities. This ensures the source is eliminated, not just the visible signs. For a permanent solution and to ensure the air quality in your bedroom is safe, it is best to call a professional company.
