Black mold on bedroom wall in Dubai—clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been so humid lately I'm worried it's gotten out of hand. What's the best way to handle this properly—should I just clean it myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

That black mold behind your wardrobe is a classic symptom of Dubai's high humidity interacting with a cold exterior wall, creating condensation. Bleach is a common but ineffective choice—it only bleaches the surface color and doesn't kill the root structure, so regrowth is almost guaranteed.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a dedicated mold remover or a vinegar solution, but you must address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, and use a dehumidifier in the room. However, since it's spreading and located on an exterior wall, the moisture issue is likely persistent and embedded.

Given the climate in JVC and the fact it's been spreading for some time, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation; the root system can penetrate deeper into the plaster or behind the tiles. A proper assessment identifies the species (some black molds are more problematic than others) and pinpoints the exact moisture entry point—whether it's a minor condensation issue or a more serious leak.

In Dubai, reputable companies use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness without guesswork, then provide a protocol for remediation that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. The goal isn't just to clean what's visible but to solve the moisture problem permanently. For a case like this, calling a professional to get a clear diagnosis is the most effective long-term solution.
