Black mold on bedroom wall in Dubai: landlord or cleaner first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried it’s been there a while. What’s the best way to get this properly treated in Dubai’s humidity, and should I call my landlord first or a professional cleaning company?

Contact your landlord first. In Dubai, rental law generally holds the property owner responsible for addressing structural issues like mold, especially when it's on an external wall which suggests a possible leak or insulation problem. Document the mold with photos and send a formal written notification to request remediation.

For mold behind furniture on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The humidity here causes condensation within walls if insulation is inadequate, and simply cleaning the surface will not stop it from returning. A proper assessment can identify the moisture source—whether it's an internal leak, penetrating damp, or condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the outside heat.

While you wait for a response, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom.

For treatment, standard cleaning companies often lack the diagnostic tools to prevent recurrence. Look for a provider that offers a moisture survey and can explain the source of the problem, not just the removal of the visible growth. The goal is to fix the underlying cause, which in many cases involves rectifying insulation or sealing issues specific to our climate.
