Black mold on bedroom wardrobe: DIY fix or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots appearing on the back of our wardrobe in the master bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. I’m worried it’s gotten worse since the recent humidity, and I have no idea if this is a simple fix with bleach or something more serious. What’s the realistic cost to get this professionally treated, and is it worth trying to handle myself first?

Black mould on a wardrobe against an outside wall is a common issue in Dubai villas, often caused by thermal bridging. The temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall creates condensation inside the wall cavity, providing the constant moisture mould needs to thrive. The recent high humidity has almost certainly accelerated its growth.

A small, superficial patch might be manageable with a DIY approach. Use a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and does not kill the roots. Scrub gently and ensure the area is thoroughly dried. However, if the mould has penetrated the wood, is larger than a square foot, or has a musty odour, it indicates a persistent moisture problem you cannot address with surface cleaning.

The realistic cost for professional remediation depends entirely on the moisture source's extent. Treating just the wardrobe is a smaller project, but if the mould is inside the wall, it becomes significantly more involved as it requires opening the cavity, addressing insulation, and ensuring the structure is dried. For an accurate assessment and fix that addresses the root cause, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the condensation source unseen within the wall. Reputable providers will then provide a scope of work and associated cost before starting any treatment.
