Black mold on closet ceiling: DIY removal or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of these black, powdery spots spreading along the ceiling in our walk-in closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I think it might be from the humidity, but I’m worried about my family breathing it in. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai?

Black mold on a ceiling, especially on an exterior wall in a villa, is a common issue in Dubai's climate due to the high humidity and temperature differential that causes condensation. The safest first step is to identify the moisture source—it's likely condensation from the AC or a small leak. Since it's spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent behind the surface and the mold species.

For a small area (less than one square meter), a cautious DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, not bleach, as bleach does not kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, the powdery, spreading nature you describe suggests it may be more established. Disturbing it without proper containment can release a significant number of spores into your home's air.

In the UAE, proper remediation involves isolating the area with plastic sheeting, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and removing the mold at its root. Given the location on an exterior wall, the underlying cause must be professionally addressed to prevent immediate regrowth. For the health of your family, especially with visible spreading, a certified assessment is the most effective course of action. They can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and provide a protocol for its removal, ensuring it is done to international standards.
