Black mold on cold wall: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's been really humid lately and that wall always feels cold. What's the best way to deal with this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

That cold wall in Al Barsha is a classic condensation point, especially with our high humidity. The temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the sun-heated exterior wall causes moisture to form, creating the perfect environment for mold.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt a DIY approach. Move the wardrobe away to expose the entire affected area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the wall with a solution of detergent and water. After it dries completely, wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) to disinfect. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Improve air circulation around that cold spot with a fan and use a dehumidifier, especially during humid periods, to keep relative humidity below 60%. If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or has penetrated through the paint into the drywall or plaster, DIY cleaning will likely only remove surface growth. The colony will return without addressing the root moisture and the hidden contamination within the wall cavity. In these cases, a professional inspection is advised to assess the full extent and source of the moisture. They can provide documentation, like lab analysis, to identify the mold type and a remediation plan that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleanup. |
