Black mold on damp bedroom carpet: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots growing along the edge of the carpet in our master bedroom, right against the wall. The room has felt a bit damp ever since we cranked the AC down for the hot weather last month. What's the best way to deal with this ourselves, or should I just call a professional mold removal company right away?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black spots on the carpet edge, a persistent damp feeling, and recent increased AC usage—this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The constant high humidity, combined with an AC unit potentially set to a very low temperature, causes significant condensation to form on cold surfaces like walls and windows. This moisture wicks into adjacent porous materials, such as your carpet and underlying padding, creating an ideal environment for mold.

For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), a careful DIY approach may be possible. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The carpet will likely need to be lifted to inspect and treat the underside and the concrete subfloor, as the mold will have penetrated deeply. However, DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix. Merely spraying the surface does not address the root moisture problem or the hidden contamination within the carpet backing and pad, which usually must be discarded.

Given the location in a bedroom and the duration (you've felt dampness for a month), I strongly recommend a professional inspection. The moisture may have migrated into the wall cavity, requiring more extensive remediation. In the UAE, proper mold remediation follows strict protocols like those from the IICRC to ensure complete removal and prevent cross-contamination, which DIY methods cannot achieve.

For a definitive assessment and a guaranteed solution, it is best to call a professional.
