Black mold on damp wall: building management or cleaning company?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and the room has felt really damp lately even with the AC on. What’s the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first or go straight to a professional cleaning company?

Contact building management first. In Dubai, landlords and building owners are responsible for addressing structural issues causing dampness, like leaking pipes or faulty external waterproofing. Document the mold with photos and send a formal written request for inspection and repair.

While waiting, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Wipe the visible mold with a diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) to help contain the spread, but this is only a temporary measure.

The dampness you describe is a classic issue here, often from condensation due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating a cold surface against a warm, moist exterior wall. If the building management is unresponsive or only addresses the leak and not the mold itself, then seek a professional inspection. They can identify the mold species and recommend a proper remediation plan to ensure it is safely removed and the underlying moisture issue is resolved to prevent recurrence.
