Black mold on damp wall: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa. It's been so humid lately that the walls almost feel damp to the touch. What's the best way to get rid of it ourselves, or should we just call a professional cleaning company straight away?

Based on the description of your villa in Jumeirah, you are dealing with a classic case of surface mold growth due to condensation and high ambient humidity. The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold), which thrive in the damp conditions created when warm, humid air contacts cooler wall surfaces, often those adjacent to or on an exterior wall.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 1 square meter), a careful DIY approach is possible. First, identify and address the moisture source; this is non-negotiable. Improve ventilation in the room and ensure your AC is functioning correctly, as it is your primary dehumidification tool in Dubai's climate. To clean, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space.

However, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. The dampness you describe feeling suggests the issue may be more than superficial condensation. The mold might be a symptom of a larger problem, such as a hidden plumbing leak or rising damp compromising the wall's structure. Disturbing extensive mold yourself can aerosolize spores and contaminate your entire living area, posing significant health risks.

Our company, Saniservice, specializes in such scenarios. We conduct a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the root cause and full extent of the contamination. Our remediation protocols are in full compliance with Dubai Municipality and NEHS guidelines, ensuring the mold is removed safely and effectively, with guarantees to prevent recurrence. For a definitive solution and peace of mind, it is best to call a professional. Contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
