Black mold on damp wall: treat or call professional first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing along the bottom of our bedroom wall that faces the outside. The wall even feels a bit damp, which is strange because it hasn't rained recently. I'm really worried it's the start of a big mold problem. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and, more importantly, who should I call first to figure out the root cause of the dampness to stop it from coming back for good?

Call a professional to diagnose the moisture source first. Treating the visible mold without fixing the underlying dampness will result in it returning quickly. In Dubai's climate, the root cause is often condensation from AC units, a hidden plumbing leak, or water ingress through the villa's external walls from faulty seals or cracks, which is common in older Jumeirah villas.

For the existing mold, avoid bleach. A solution of distilled white vinegar can help clean small surface areas temporarily, but this is not a permanent fix. The wall feeling damp indicates an active moisture issue that requires professional assessment.

You should call a certified mold inspector or a reputable remediation company that focuses on diagnostics. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall. Their goal is to provide a cause-and-effect report, not just a cleaning quote. A proper inspection is the only way to get a lasting solution and prevent structural damage.

The remediation process they might recommend involves isolating the area, removing affected materials like damp drywall or insulation, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions. The final, critical step is always the repair of the identified moisture leak.
