Black mold on exterior wall: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten much worse. What's the best way to handle this properly—should I just clean it myself with something from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Given the location on an exterior wall in Jumeirah and its recent spread, this is likely a serious moisture issue that requires professional assessment. The high humidity we experience, combined with temperature differences between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall, creates perfect conditions for condensation and mold growth behind furniture.
Cleaning it yourself with a store-bought solution is a temporary fix at best. The visible mold is only the surface manifestation; the underlying moisture problem is still active within the wall. Simply wiping the surface will not address the root cause, and the mold will almost certainly return. For a small, isolated area of surface mold, a DIY approach might be sufficient, but your description of it "spreading" indicates an established colony. The proper protocol involves first identifying and stopping the source of moisture, which could be infiltrating rainwater, internal condensation, or a plumbing leak. Then, the affected building materials must be assessed. Porous materials like drywall or plaster can harbor mold deep within, requiring controlled removal and replacement, not just surface cleaning. For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters to pinpoint the water source and may recommend thermal imaging to see the full extent behind the wall. Remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure it's contained and removed safely, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your home. The goal is to fix the moisture issue and remove the contaminated materials, not just disinfect the visible spots. |
