Black mold on exterior wall: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried it might have started after that really humid week we had last month. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray but it came back after a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

That pattern suggests a moisture issue from outside. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls can develop condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior, especially during the summer months. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the moisture source or the hyphae (roots) growing within the porous wall material.

For a recurring problem on an exterior wall, a DIY approach is unlikely to be a permanent fix. The wall cavity likely has elevated moisture levels that need to be identified. I recommend a professional inspection to diagnose the exact moisture source—it could be a small leak from a pipe or AC condensate drain, or more commonly, penetrating dampness exacerbated by humidity. They will use moisture meters to assess the wall's saturation level.

If the affected area is larger than one square meter, or if you or any family members experience persistent allergies or respiratory issues, professional remediation is strongly advised to properly contain the area and remove contaminated materials. Look for a provider that uses lab analysis to confirm the mold type and can provide a post-remediation verification report to ensure it’s truly resolved, not just cleaned cosmetically.
