Black mold on leather from AC leak: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past month, and now I’m finding black, fuzzy spots on a few of my leather handbags and shoes stored in there. I wiped it with vinegar but the smell is still musty and it’s starting to come back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it?

The black fuzzy spots are likely active mould growth, which is common when persistent moisture from an AC leak meets Dubai's high ambient humidity. Leather is porous, so mould can penetrate deep below the surface, making a DIY approach often insufficient for a complete resolution.

Vinegar is a mild disinfectant but doesn't kill all mould types and won't remove the deep-seated spores or the underlying organic residue that the mould is feeding on. This is why the growth and musty smell return. For valuable items like leather goods, an improper cleaning attempt can permanently set the stain or damage the material.

Given the AC leak has been ongoing for a month, the problem is likely more extensive than the visible spots. The moisture has probably affected the closet structure itself—the walls, ceiling, or flooring—creating a hidden reservoir of mould. Simply cleaning the items won't solve the problem; the source must be addressed.

For this scenario, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will first identify and repair the AC leak, which is the critical first step. Then, a proper remediation process for the closet space is needed to eliminate hidden mould. Finally, a specialist can assess your leather items; some restoration companies have specific expertise in cleaning mould from luxury goods without causing damage. A professional inspection can determine the extent and provide a targeted solution, as continued exposure in a confined space like a closet poses an indoor air quality risk.
