black mold on wall: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has started showing these black spots, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it might be from condensation because that wall is an exterior one. I’m trying to figure out if I can just scrub it off with some bleach myself or if this is a bigger issue where I need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai?

Black mold on an exterior wall in Dubai is frequently caused by thermal bridging, where the hot outdoor wall meets cooled indoor air, creating condensation. This is a common issue in our climate.
For a small patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. Use a solution of one part bleach to four parts water, or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, but more importantly, address the moisture source. Wipe down the wall regularly to remove condensation and improve air circulation around the area. A dehumidifier can help reduce ambient humidity. If the mold returns after cleaning, the patch is larger than one square meter, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. Returning mold indicates a deeper moisture issue within the wall cavity that scrubbing can't fix. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source. In such cases, remediation involves controlled removal of affected materials to prevent spore dispersal. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for property maintenance regarding dampness and mold, making it a landlord's responsibility to fix if the cause is structural, like inadequate insulation or a leak. For a rental, document the issue and notify your property manager immediately. A certified inspector can identify the species, which determines the necessary remediation protocol, and provide documentation that the underlying cause has been resolved. |
