Black mold on wall: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has started to get these dark, fuzzy black spots, and it’s been spreading since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back worse. We’re in an older building in Deira and I’m worried it’s in the walls. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here?

Based on your description of recurring dark, fuzzy black spots on an interior wall in an older Deira building, this is a classic case of a mold infestation exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The high humidity, combined with potential condensation from year-round AC use and the possibility of latent moisture within the building's structure, creates a perfect environment for mold. Your attempt at cleaning with vinegar likely only removed surface growth, while the underlying colony and moisture source remained intact, hence the rapid and worse regrowth.

For a situation like this, a DIY approach is strongly discouraged and potentially hazardous. Disturbing the mold by scrubbing can aerosolize toxic spores, leading to widespread contamination and serious health risks. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict health and safety standards (such as those from Dubai Municipality and DHA) that DIY methods cannot meet. These regulations require containment, specialized HEPA filtration, and professional-grade antimicrobial treatments to ensure complete eradication and prevent cross-contamination.

Given that the wall is likely a cold bridge for condensation and the building is older, the moisture source could be internal (like a hidden pipe leak) or structural. This necessitates a professional inspection with tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters to diagnose the root cause. Without addressing this, the problem will persist indefinitely.

For a thorough, compliant, and guaranteed resolution, you need a professional mold remediation company. I recommend contacting Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan.
