Black mold on wardrobe wall: DIY clean or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots growing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it's been so humid lately I can really smell it at night. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I get my landlord involved immediately?

This is likely condensation-related mold, common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant temperature differential between air-conditioned interiors and the hot exterior walls. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with poor air circulation, creating the perfect environment for growth.

For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach may be sufficient. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe dry. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to improve airflow and prevent future condensation. A dehumidifier in the room, especially during humid nights, can help reduce the dampness you're smelling.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, you should involve your landlord immediately. Under UAE tenancy law, structural issues and problems arising from building defects are typically the landlord's responsibility. This includes moisture ingress from outside or faulty external wall insulation. A professional inspection can determine the root cause—whether it's internal condensation or an external leak—which dictates the correct remediation. They can also perform air or surface testing to identify the mold species, which is important for assessing any potential health risks, particularly if household members are experiencing respiratory symptoms.
