Black mold remediation cost and DIY safety?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been really humid lately and I think it’s been growing there for a while, but we only noticed it when we moved the furniture. What’s the realistic cost range for professional mold remediation for a spot about one meter square, and is it safe to try and clean it myself with bleach?

The cost for professional remediation of a one-meter square area depends heavily on whether the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or insulation. For surface-level growth on a non-porous wall, the process is less invasive and more affordable. If the wall cavity is affected, the scope—and cost—increases significantly as it requires removal and replacement of building materials. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that breaks down containment, removal, and air scrubbing.

Using bleach is not recommended. It can irritate your airways during application and only bleaches the visible surface, leaving the root structure intact. The moisture from the bleach can also feed deeper mold growth. For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner can be more effective, but this is only a temporary measure if the moisture source isn't fixed.

Given the symptoms you describe and Dubai's high humidity, which creates ideal conditions for mold, a professional inspection is strongly advised. What you see is often just the tip of the iceberg; hidden growth inside walls or under flooring is common. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and often air quality testing to identify spore types and concentrations, which is crucial when health symptoms are present. This determines the full scope of remediation needed.
