Black mold removal cost and DIY safety for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet here in our Jumeirah villa. It’s gotten way worse since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and I’m worried about their health. For a small area like this, are we looking at a few hundred dirhams or over a thousand to get it professionally removed, and is it really necessary to hire someone or can I tackle it myself?

Black mold in a Jumeirah villa is a serious health concern, especially with children coughing. The high humidity here accelerates its growth, and the spores can become airborne, directly irritating the respiratory system.

For a small, contained area like a closet ceiling, professional remediation is strongly advised over DIY when children are involved. The primary risk is not the cleaning itself but the improper containment and dispersal of spores throughout your home during removal, which can exacerbate the health issues. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to ensure the mold is removed, not just spread. The cost for a small job is typically on the lower end of the scale, but you must get an on-site assessment for an accurate quote, as the price depends on the extent of growth behind the surface and the required containment protocols.

A proper inspection will also identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts in the ceiling or poor ventilation—which must be fixed to prevent immediate recurrence. Until it's handled, improve air circulation in the closet and keep the door closed to minimize spore migration.
