Black mold returned after cleaning; call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it came back even after I wiped it down with a bleach solution. I'm worried it's coming from inside the wall itself, especially after all the humidity we had last month. Should I try a stronger cleaning method myself, or is this a job for a professional?

The return of black mold after cleaning with bleach indicates a persistent moisture source, likely inside the wall cavity. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it cannot address the root cause or the hyphae (root structures) penetrating porous materials like drywall or paint.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue on exterior walls. The significant temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the extreme outdoor heat creates a perfect environment for condensation within the wall itself, especially during periods of high humidity. This hidden moisture fuels mold growth from the inside out.

For a recurring problem like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY methods will continue to fail. An expert will use a borescope to inspect inside the wall for insulation damage and hidden water intrusion and use a moisture meter to quantify the dampness level. The most critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source, which could be a minor leak, capillary action from the foundation, or chronic condensation.

Attempting a stronger cleaning method yourself risks disturbing the colony and releasing a large number of spores into your home's air. If the mold has penetrated the drywall, the affected section will likely need to be carefully removed and replaced after the moisture issue is resolved. Given that this is in a closet with stored fabrics, professional assessment is the safest course to protect your indoor air quality and belongings.
