Black mold returned after cleaning, need professional help?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It wasn't there before the recent humidity spike and it's grown to about the size of a dinner plate. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back within a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaners or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

The return after a vinegar wipe indicates a deeper moisture issue, not just a surface problem. In Dubai's high humidity, this is common on exterior walls where condensation forms behind closets or under windows. The size and recurrence mean this requires professional assessment.

You need to identify and stop the moisture source first. A common cause here is thermal bridging, where the concrete wall behind acts as a cold surface in the air-conditioned room, attracting condensation from our humid air. Simply cleaning it will never work. A professional inspection uses a moisture meter to find the exact dampness level inside the wall and an infrared camera to locate the cold spot causing the condensation.

For a patch that size, remediation involves more than wiping. The area needs to be contained to prevent spores from spreading, the affected section of drywall may require removal if moisture has penetrated deeply, and the area must be treated with appropriate antimicrobial agents. After remediation, addressing the root cause is essential, often by improving insulation on that wall to prevent the condensation from recurring.

Given the humidity and the failed DIY attempt, a professional inspection is recommended to properly diagnose the moisture source and scope of the mold growth.
