Black mold spreading behind wardrobe: DIY or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in our bedroom has started showing these black speckles, and it's been spreading since the weather got more humid last month. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back worse a few days later. We live in an older building in Deira and I'm worried it's in the wall itself. Should I call a professional cleaning company, or is there a stronger DIY solution I can try first?

The rapid return after a DIY treatment indicates the moisture source is still active and the mold is likely established within the wall cavity. This is a common issue in older Deira buildings, where high humidity and temperature fluctuations cause condensation on cooler interior walls, especially behind large furniture blocking airflow.

Vinegar or bleach only addresses surface discoloration, not the root cause. For a recurring problem like this, a stronger DIY solution is not recommended and could disturb spores, increasing airborne exposure. The wall likely needs to be opened to assess the extent of the growth and identify the moisture source, which could be internal condensation or a hidden pipe leak.

You should seek a professional inspection. A reputable provider will use a borescope to inspect inside the wall and a moisture meter to pinpoint the water source. The goal is to identify the species and the full scope of the problem. Dubai Municipality guidelines for remediation are strict, requiring containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination.

For a situation like this, proper remediation involves removing the affected drywall, treating the cavity, and ensuring the moisture issue is resolved before rebuilding. Simply cleaning the surface will not work. Ask any inspector for their methodology and how they will verify the environment is dry and stable post-remediation, typically with follow-up moisture readings.
