Black mold spreading on bedroom wall: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's getting worse. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should I call a professional company straight away?

The black spots spreading behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods. The wall behind furniture is a cold spot with poor air circulation from your AC, allowing moisture to condense and mold to thrive.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to manage it yourself. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air to circulate. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and not the root structure. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. The most critical step is to address the moisture source; use a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is running efficiently to control humidity levels. However, given that it is spreading and located in a bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots are often just the surface manifestation; the mold may have penetrated deeper into the gypsum board or behind it. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the wall's saturation level and determine the extent of the problem. They can also take tape or air samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and planning the correct remediation strategy. In many cases, the only permanent solution is to remove and replace the affected drywall section to ensure the colony is entirely eradicated. |
