Black mold spreading on bedroom wall: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

That pattern suggests a moisture issue, likely from condensation due to the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid outside air, a very common problem in Dubai. The wall behind furniture is a prime spot because airflow is restricted.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY approach. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe and clean the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the root structure. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dried. A dehumidifier or increased AC runtime can help. However, this is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture source isn't addressed. Given that it's on an exterior wall and spreading, the moisture is likely penetrating the wall or from significant condensation. DIY cleaning often fails in these scenarios because the mould regrows quickly. The most effective step is to identify and eliminate the source of the dampness, which may require a professional inspection. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact entry point and assess if the mould has penetrated deeper into the wall cavity. For persistent, recurring, or larger patches, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can confirm the species and provide a remediation plan that addresses the root cause to prevent it from returning, which is crucial in our climate. |
