Black mold under AC vent: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s directly under the AC vent, which has been dripping a little more than usual lately. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company straight away?

The black spots under your AC vent are almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai villas due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The dripping vent is the root cause—it's creating a damp microclimate perfect for mold growth on the cool ceiling surface.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach may be sufficient. First, address the leak. Clear the condensate drain line with a vinegar solution and ensure the drip pan isn't blocked. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Improve air circulation in the room and direct the AC vanes away from the wall to prevent condensation. However, given the location (ceiling/wall corner) and that it's spreading, the mold may have penetrated the porous drywall or insulation behind the surface. DIY cleaning often removes only the visible growth, not the root structure. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent of the hidden moisture damage and identify the mold species. Remediation for established growth like this typically requires containment, HEPA vacuuming, and possibly removing and replacing the affected building material to prevent recurrence. A certified provider can also perform a post-remediation verification test to confirm the space is truly clean. |
